It is a relatively well-kept secret that North Texas
has Whitetail sizes that rival the Deer in South Texas . Just last
year a Bow hunter took a 230+ point Boone and Crockett Buck on the
Hagerman WMA, just down the Red River from the Ranch. Also, pictured
on our site is a 211 point buck locked with a 157 point buck mount
that was found on the ranch last year.
We didn't do much hunting this year, due to too
much work obligations, and about 30 inches of rain!. However,
a client took a book buck that
scored over 187 points, and two others were taken over 160. We've
also seen and heard lots of mountain lion activity!
Keep coming back for photos, I just haven't had the time to get
to that.
After what was a very challenging weather year in North Texas, (very
windy and dry, highs pushing 90), we were fortunate to have some
frosty weather come in just in time for a very good hunt.
Our Good friends Steve Jones ( 1996 US Open Golf Champion) and Mike
Moore ( all star pitcher for the Oakland A's) came down to meet with
Mossy Oak's Tack Robinson for a whitetail hunt for Tack's production " Second
Season" which airs on the Golf Channel.
We only had the opportunity to film 3 hunts, and fortunately Steve
was able to get a nice buck on the first morning. It was 14 degrees,
with a brisk breeze coming right in the windows of the blind, but
Steve was able to stop shivering just long enough to make a great
shot!
We then relocated to another area of the ranch and hunted a 10 point
with some drop tines that we had been seeing. He was sighted a couple
of times by both Steve and Mike, who was hunting another blind, but
never long enough for a clean shot.
Tack had to return to Mississippi and Mike back to Oklahoma, so
I took Steve back to the field that he had hunted that morning at
about 2:00. He got antsy in the blind, and decided to stalk along
a treeline to get closed to some activity behind some round bales
at the end of the field. Thanks to the excellent Camouflage provided
to us by MOSSY OAK, Steve was able to stay undetected as a spike
buck came out of the trees not 15 feet in front of him!
He was followed by a very nice 10 point, tall and palmated, and
Steve was able to keep calm long enough to bring him down. He should
score BIG!
Our other hunters were all able to see a lot of deer in spite of
the weather. Mike Grant was able to take this deer on December 8,
which scored 132.
